Care. Connect. Protect.: Care Through Preparedness — Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training
The training is a flagship mental health and disaster preparedness initiative of the Rotaract Club of Tacloban, designed to equip youth leaders, student leaders, volunteers, and community advocates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to provide compassionate support during emergencies and times of crisis. Recognizing that disasters and traumatic events affect not only physical safety but also emotional well-being, the project emphasizes the importance of preparedness that begins with empathy and human connection.

The two-day training was facilitated by Ms. Normae C. Ecija, RPm, RGC, and Dr. Cherie Guy B. Giray, LPT, RGC, DEVEDD-GC, who guided participants through the core principles of Psychological First Aid (PFA). Through engaging lectures and interactive discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of stress and trauma responses, effective communication techniques, active listening, and appropriate helping strategies that can be used to support individuals experiencing emotional distress following emergencies or difficult life events. The sessions reinforced that Psychological First Aid is not about providing therapy, but about offering immediate, compassionate support while helping individuals feel safe, heard, and connected to the resources they need.

Building on these foundational concepts, the second day focused on experiential learning through realistic simulations and guided role-playing exercises. Participants applied the skills they had learned in various emergency scenarios, allowing them to practice providing calm, compassionate, and appropriate responses while receiving constructive feedback from the facilitators. These activities strengthened participants’ confidence and preparedness, transforming theoretical knowledge into practical action.

The program was further enriched by the inspiring presence of District Governor Arlene J. Adlawan, who shared a message highlighting the importance of prioritizing mental health as an integral part of community service and disaster preparedness. She encouraged participants to become advocates of compassion and emotional resilience within their schools, organizations, workplaces, and communities.

Through Care. Connect. Protect., the Rotaract Club of Tacloban continues its commitment to empowering young leaders with the skills and confidence to serve others in meaningful ways. By fostering empathy, preparedness, and resilience, the project contributes to building stronger communities where compassion becomes the first response and every individual is equipped to support others during life’s most challenging moments.
