Ecotrace Initiative: Advancing Environmental Research Through Microplastics Science
The Ecotrace Initiative is the environmental sustainability project of the Rotaract Club of Tacloban, dedicated to advancing scientific research, environmental education, and community action against plastic pollution. Recognizing the growing threat of microplastics to ecosystems, wildlife, and human health, the initiative equips students, researchers, and young environmental advocates with the knowledge and technical skills needed to contribute to evidence-based environmental conservation.
As part of the initiative, the Microplastics Sampling and Detection Techniques Training brought together participants for an intensive three-day laboratory program at the MedBio Laboratory in Tacloban City. Designed to bridge the gap between environmental awareness and scientific application, the training provided participants with hands-on experience in internationally recognized methods for collecting, processing, and analyzing environmental samples for microplastic contamination.
Throughout the program, participants conducted laboratory exercises involving water and sediment sampling, biota examination, microplastics identification, laboratory processing, and data validation. Under the guidance of experienced facilitators, they developed practical skills in research methodologies while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of accuracy, consistency, and scientific integrity in environmental studies. By combining theoretical discussions with laboratory application, the training empowered participants to generate reliable data that can support future environmental policies, conservation programs, and academic research.
The success of the initiative was made possible through the collaboration of the RTRMF Biology Department and the RTREF – Medical Biology Society, together with numerous Rotaract clubs from across the Philippines and Vietnam. This broad partnership highlighted the power of collaboration in addressing global environmental challenges and strengthened a shared commitment to protecting natural ecosystems through science and service.
